Frequently Asked Questions

Traditional Chinese medicine explains acupuncture as a technique for balancing the flow of energy or life force (Qi-pronounced “chee”) that flows through pathways (meridians) in your body. There are hundreds of points that can be found head to toe, front and back. By inserting needles into specific points along these meridians, harmony and balance can be restored. What this means on a physical level is more coherence in the nervous system, a stronger immune system and less pain.

You can begin by reaching out through the contact form, email, or phone to schedule a brief introductory call. This gives us a chance to connect, discuss what brings you to this work, and determine whether we feel like a good fit.
If we decide to move forward together, we will schedule an initial 90-minute session. This first appointment allows time to explore your history, goals, and current challenges while beginning treatment. From there, we will work together to create a pace and treatment cadence that feels supportive, sustainable, and aligned with your needs.

My work combines acupuncture with somatic and nervous system-based approaches to healing. Sessions are collaborative, trauma-informed, and guided by regulation. The goal is not limited to symptom relief, but helping the body move toward greater safety, resilience, and connection over time.

Acupuncture affects everyone differently. Most people do not feel the needles. Some people feel a pinch from needle insertion. Some people can feel pressure, heat, tingling or a pulse at the needle site. Any pain should only last seconds. Your acupuncturist will want to know what you are experiencing. No needle that is not tolerable needs to stay inserted.
-
Acupuncture is widely acknowledged as one of the safest forms of medicine. Acupuncture needles are pre-sterilized, individually packaged and disposable. Acupuncturists undergo extensive training and are regulated by the individual state’s medicine board.

The frequency of treatments can vary from a few times a week to a few times a year. In the beginning, I recommend once a week for at least 4-6 sessions. Many factors, such as health, age, environment, and schedule, may contribute to the number of initial sessions you require. Before spacing out sessions, I like to see that the treatment effects hold for a full week. Many people continue with weekly sessions for several months.
-
You do not need to believe in acupuncture! I have treated many skeptics over the years, and really enjoy their genuine surprise and amazement at the helpful results of treatment.
-
I do not. I give receipts for reimbursement. Increasingly, more and more insurance policies are accepting acupuncture services. Contact your insurance company for help determining if your plan offers reimbursement for acupuncture treatment.

Somatic Experiencing 101
Somatic Experiencing (SE™) aims to resolve symptoms of stress, shock, and trauma that accumulate in our bodies and nervous systems. SE It offers a framework to assess where a person is “stuck” in the fight, flight, or freeze responses and provides clinical tools to resolve these fixated physiological states. The SE approach releases traumatic shock, which is key to transforming stuck patterns that impact people’s daily lives and can be used to support the resolution of PTSD or developmental attachment trauma.
Trauma may result from a wide variety of stressors, such as accidents, invasive medical procedures, sexual or physical assault, emotional abuse, neglect, war, natural disasters, loss, birth trauma, epigenetics, systems, or the corrosive stressors of ongoing fear and conflict. Trauma may begin as acute stress from a perceived life-threat or as the end product of cumulative stress. Both types of stress can impair a person’s ability to function with resilience and ease.
The SE approach facilitates the completion of self- protective motor responses and the release of thwarted survival energy bound in the body, thus addressing the root cause of trauma symptoms. This is approached by gently guiding clients to develop increasing tolerance for difficult bodily sensations and suppressed emotions, and by working to complete defensive responses that were previously thwarted. This brings resolution to the nervous system and, therefore, the individual.
